Firstly, as someone else suggested, go to a chinese restaurant and watch how people hold and manipulate the chopsticks. Secondly, always make sure that the small end meet together and that can be done by pushing the chopsticks downwards inside the bowl or table so they are even at the bottom. Thirdly, Whenever possible (and some people prefer to hold slightly lower) hold the chopsticks 3/4 of the way to the top. Practice will make it easier.
I was lucky, friends of mine are chinese and when I started going to their place the mother said I had to learn and would not let me use a knife & fork. I love my food and I quickly learnt, and it came in handy when I started working overseas.

Most Chinese hold chopsticks slightly farther than each other, but it meets at the end. The 'crossed' way of holding chopsticks, (letting it form an 'x') is considered disrespectful (according to my mom anyway)

Hold the bottom stick between the base of the thumb and the base of the index finger near one end, with the tip of the ring finger resting on it further down. Hold the top stick with the thumb, index finger, and middle finger. To pick up an object, place the tip of the bottom stick on the plate at the near side of the object, then LOOSEN YOUR GRIP on the top stick and allow it to slide into place on the far side. Note that last instruction carefully. You are not gripping the top stick and placing it on the plate. You are allowing it to fall into place. Finally, push the object away with the bottom stick while GENTLY guiding the top stick down on top of it. The key to the whole thing is to relax, and trust that the top stick will move to where it's supposed to.

My advice is to go to a Chinese restaurant and watch other people. A picture is worth a thousand words, and all that...
