I've had the pleasure on three different occasions.
For me, the first was the worst, mainly due to the added anxiety of not really being sure what was going on. Don't get me wrong, the other two times really sucked, but I was better prepared to deal with it.
The pain is due to the spasming of the ureter, iritated by the stone. Once the stone made it to the bladder, the worst was over.
Some time later, hours for me, the stone makes its way out of the bladder. It hurt a little, but it was a different, more tolerable discomfort.
I find that staying better hydrated has worked for me in not experiencing any more stones.
I guess to answer your question...yes, they hurt.

If they are just sitting in the tubules in the kidney, they generally cause no pain. The problem is when they "pass"---squeeze out through those tubes. A stone as tiny as a grain of salt can cause significant pain.

Yes, kidney stones can be painful, especially if they are trying to come out.

If they haven't traveled to your bladder yet, then yes! I'd rather have 10 more kids than ever have another kidney stone.

Extremely painful....you'll know it if you ever go through that drama.
