Scampi is the tail end of:
The Norway Lobster, also known as Langoustine or Dublin Bay Prawn.
Don't be fooled by some restaurants/pubs serving deep fried scampi (and chips) which is really bits of prawn - the difference is like scrag end and best end of lamb!!

The beastie in question is called Nephrops norvegicus, aka Norway Lobster, Dublin Bay Prawn, Langoustine etc. It is a swine to eat whole and most people just eat the tail which someone back in the 60s decided to call scampi. To get the real thing it should be listed as 'wholetail scampi' and not any other phrase, beware 'genuine' or 'local' these term mean very little unless they lead on to 'wholetail'. The rest is mechanically recovered bits, white fish with dye or some other strangeness.

The real Mcoy is the pacific prawn but the what most people in Uk know as scampi is the tail of the Monkfish. In recent years the price of this fish has risen considerably and manufacturers have started using other types of prawn to keep price down.

Its the tail of a variety of different prawns the most famous is probably the Dublin Bay Prawn which is large and juicy. But beware there are some things which are processed like crab sticks which are not really authentic seafood, just processed bits covered in breadcrumbs etc...
