If people still payed homage to the Earth, Air, Fire and Water - we would not have all the environmental problems that we have today. And I do not think Christians are truly monotheistic. They believe that God and the Devil are 2 different people and they are both super natural - Sounds like 2 different deities to me.

Monotheism spread because of one reason.
People in every society from the dawn of time have recognized a supernatural force or divine power in the world. People in every society from the dawn of time have also recognized a moral pull, a feeling which we call conscience. Judaism was the first major religion to state that these two forces - the moral and the supernatural - were one and the same entity. Once you make that leap, there are only two natural conclusions for a religion, one is monotheism and the other is dualism. Dualism has always been a minority view. So monotheism spread because it was the better of the two. And it has also proved remarkably more resilient than paganism, which keeps the supernatural firmly divorced from the moral.

Well Dr. if you research this you will find the oldest recorded mention of religion was Monotheistic. Ancient tablets found in the city of Ur and in Northern Iraq, speak of only one God. It would seem the idea of multiple Gods was a later development. Which would be normal, first the actual story or incident, then as time goes on and the story is passed on, it changes. Just like the game we have children play in Elementary school.
Interesting side note, Ur was supposedly the birth place of some guy called Moses! Coincidence I guess.

It spread because God made it spread through those who gave themselves up to Him. Sure, there were those who thought it gave them power and political gain, but God enters into all things to work His good. I'm a Protestant, and there were many like me who were persecuted by the Roman Catholics. That didn't make Christianity bad, in fact, it made us more notable.
The fact that it is a form of monotheism is irrelevant. It's what God wants and we have survived centuries of persecutions and still we will not disappear.
I think that's cool.

I actually 'shopped around.' i've got been a loose philosopher, a United Methodist, a Vedantist (a sub-group from the Hindu faith that believes Jesus replaced into an 'avatar' of God on the earth), a Buddhist (East Indian first, later Vietnamese), then became an Episcopalian and ultimately a Roman Catholic. for the duration of my 'seek' i got here upon that anybody the countless 'deities' are quite an identical God, and got here to Catholicism because of fact i assumed then (and now be attentive to) that i've got been an 'unconfirmed Roman Catholic' considering the fact that until now I became a Methodist. Even Roman Catholicism does not in good shape me 'completely' yet I even have faith that if a faith does in good shape completely, i might desire to locate one that forces me to 'substitute into it' so as that my religious existence can proceed alongside the main appropriate direction. i desire that when i'm lifeless, God will tell me 'something of the tale.'
