That is a hard question to answer just for the fact that different eras took different types of drivers.I tend to split things around the mid 90's when I talk about Nascar. Before that I would have to say Dale Sr,Petty,Allison's,Cale,Baker and Pearson. From the mid 90's on I would go with Gordan,Tony,Mark Martin,Dale Sr again. To pick a all time I think would be hard.I don't think any of todays drivers would make it in the pre mainstream days of Nascar other then Tony and Gordon. At the sametime I don't think the older drivers would have made it in today's Nascar....not because of their driving....that wouldn't be a problem...they just wouldn't fit into the PR image that all driver's in Nascar must have in todays times. The bad thing is sometimes I feel the PR image is more importent then how well they drive...but thats a different subject.

That's almost like asking what was the best day of your life. Your 5th birthday, when your father took you to your first race? The day you got married? The day your child was born? In a way, if you answer one or the other, you lessen the great events of your life.
NASCAR has had so many great drivers. A driver that won 200 races and 7 championships (Richard Petty). A driver that won over 70 races and 7 championships, and brought the racing world to tears when he died do what he loved (Dale Earnhardt). Than you have a driver that has never won a championship, but has given a lot to his sport in the way that he handles himself on and off the track (Mark Martin).
I think that NASCAR has had a lot of "best drivers ever." It's hard to name just one. I know that this is only an opinion question, so I'm just giving my opinion. I'd have to say Mark Martin, because of his dedication to the sport and the way he has handled himself throughout his career.
I do have an answer of who I think the worst driver ever is. And, he is actually a recent Winston Cup champion (I don't refer to champions of Winston Cup as Nextel Cup champions. Again, the lessens the importance of what Winston did for the sport). That would be Kurt Busch.
A few years ago, while racing against Jimmy Spencer, Kurt purposely tried to flatten part of Spencer's race car so that Spencer would get a flat tire. Busch actually made comments to that effect over his radio to his crew chief. That isn't the worst part of the deal, and if it was, I could probably overlook it. Many NASCAR drivers have done one thing or another to wreck another driver because of a rivalry. The rivalry between Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip was often publicized, and the two of them spent many days on the track just bumping and banging into each other.
However, Busch made the comment that he "didn't have any respect for Jimmy Spencer." Well, that was wrong. In any sport, you must respect your fellow competitors and their right to compete. Being the best driver out there does not mean you don't have to show your fellow racers respect, whether you like them or not.

The question with no right answer or wrong answer.
The opinion of everyone is different so any answer is the right or best,so here would be my grouping.
Early years: The Flock Brothers,Lee Petty,Buck Backer
The 60's:Fireball Roberts,Curtis Turner,Junior Johnson,Fred Lorenzen.
The 70's: Cale Yarbrough,Richard Petty,David Pearson.
The 80"s: Dale Earnhardt,Bobby Allison,Darrell Waltrip.
the 90"s:Jeff Gordon,Bill Elliot,Davey Allison(RIP)
Today,Jeff Gordon,Tony Stewart,Jimmie Johnsom.
No order,no number 1 just an opinion.
That's all I have to say about that.

Hard question to answer. In 50+ years the sport & racing has changed alot. Today is more tech than driver skill. If pressed I'd say Jeff Gordon or Petty. They won lots of races, on all courses (short, plate, road, cookie cutter, dirt for Petty) and have the cups to back it up.

That's a question that probably doesn't have an answer than many people will agree with. My answer is Tony Stewart. I believe if you could transport Tony back in time, he'd be a winner in any era of Nascar. I don't like Jeff Gordon, but he's also one of those guys that would also do well in any time period of Nascar.

depends on what time period you are talking about, King Richard during the 60's-70's, Dale during the 80's-90's, Jeffy since then ? Also could make arguments for others, David Pearson didn't run every race, but he won 100 +, Cale Y. 3 championships in a row etc... My money would be on Dale, 7 championships, this during a time that it was more competitive, not as many races in each year(60 + during Richard's era)
