My nephew somehow deleted all the modem files on one of my computers. The Modems icon even disappeared out of the Control Panel. At first I thought the modem had gone bad, so I bought a new one but I can't install it. Device Manager says it's in there and working properly but Device Manager is WRONG! I keep getting messages saying the modem failed to respond, and the modem information files are corrupt. Can I extract the files one by one from my Windows 98 installation disk? How do I find out what they are and where they go? Or is there an easier way?

I've tried everything. Removing hardware doesn't work because technically, the modem is in there but there are no files to make it work. A friend told me I'd have to remove and reinstall Windows 98 but that seems a bit extreme. Any other ideas?

This isn't a stupid question. It's actually a decent one.

I'm assuming this is Win98. You want to go to your Settings and click on "remove hardware"

Then you can probably reinstall it with your Win98 CD.
