The most important thing is to BUY a yummy hotdog! Some brands just taste better than others. Also, be careful how the store stores the 'dogs, and how you take it home. Even a yummy brand tastes disgusting if it spoils the least little bit. Keep it cold until you are ready to cook it, and freeze it immediately unless you can cook it by the "use by" date.

My favorite way is grilled dogs, because I like them a little crunchy and burnt around the edges. The slits will help with the crispy factor, but it may allow too many juices to seep out. It will make it safer for children to eat, though. Cook over a medium flame. Or, stick it on a chopstick, and grill over a flame (even gas flame will work if you are super-careful and don't mind cleaning up the mess).

The cutest way to make a hot dog is to cut it in half the short way. Then, cut the bottom inch of the dogs three or four times to make six or eight "legs." The uncut part is the "head." Put it in a little boiling water and cook for three or four minutes, and the legs will curl up and you will have very cute hot dog octopuses! You can put on black sesame seeds as eyes, too.

Here's what they look like, only these people used whole hot dogs instead of half ones:

Yeah,20-30 seconds in microwave. Can boil covered with water until hot. Can also put into a small fry pan with a little oleo/butter and cook until as browned as you want. They are delicious fixed this way. Only takes 5 minutes. Cut a slice length wise down the hot dog, but not all the way through.Make a pocket.Put into the pocket 1/2 cheese slice and brown in the oven till cheese melts. Enjoy.

I dont put slits in it. Cover it in cold water in a saucepan and bring it to boil. But dont boil. Turn off before it boils. Or it will split, heat your bun, add whatever you like.
eg; butter, sauce, mustard, onions, pickles, cheese.
Or you can buy a hotdag cooker!!!!

Slits will allow the hot dog to plump up, grilling caramelizes and intensifies the flavor. That's why its my favorite cooking method.
