Suppose I wanted an _original_ Monet painting to hang in my house. Not a not a copy painting, an original by Claude Monet himself. How much would this cost? Yes, there's a range -- what would it be? And yes, I expect it's expensive.

Are you sure you mean a Monet painting and not an original print of some kind (made by Monet)? An original signed and authenticated Monet painting would sell for tens and tens of millions of dollars. But the only way to get a reliable estimate is to have the piece appraised by a reputable art appraiser. Auction houses will have lists of trustworthy appraisers. It is not inexpensive, but it's really the only way to get a true estimate of value.

There's an old saying that applies here..."if you have to ask...you CAN'T afford it" I don't know about Monets, but one of Van Gogh's Sunflowers went for $96 million about 5 years ago. I'm no art appraiser, but I'd guess an oil work would go for between 12 ( a small study) and 100 million.

You would have to be vigilant in pursuing art museums and auction houses like Christie's just to find one available. It would mean waiting a very long time for that opportunity. Then, depending on who else is bidding, it would be many millions of dollars. Save every penny you see on the ground.

I would suggest starting your research on line instead of asking inexperienced art estimators. NO direct pun to any other answers intended.
