It's only called a canvas if they're actually painting on canvas. If they're painting with oil paint then most likely it is a canvas whether it's cotton or linen.

Otherwise it's just paint on wood, paint on whatever type of paper, and so forth.

Canvas, paper, wood, wall, cardboard, it depends what the artist is painting on, that is surface.

Often we just call it just that, "the surface." But if we paint on canvas, we may say " the canvas." Or if we use Masonite, we'll say, "the board."

Well, it is after we finish painting it we starting giving names to it. but before it is just a blank surface. right?
