You should look into 3 basic supplements.
1. Protein shakes. I believe in changing it up every few weeks - whey, casein, egg, soy.
2. Creatine. Creatine supplies instant "bursts" of energy to muscle cells, enabling athletes to train harder leading to accelerated muscle growth, greater strength, fuller muscles and enhance performance.
Creatine is naturally produced in our bodies, mostly in the liver. It is also found in red meat, pork, tuna, herring and salmon.
3. Glutamine. Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue and is literally stripped from the muscles during times of stress. Because this depletion can cause muscle wasting and lower immune function, glutamine is considered "conditionally essential." Most quality whey-protein supplements are fortified with glutamine.
An additional suggestion. Weightlifters typically go one of two routes: Bodybuilding or Powerlifting. I would encourage powerlifting. My major critique of bodybuilding is that it is unhealthy. Your body's organs are just as damaged by adding 100 extra pounds of meat on your bones as they are by fat. Think about it: if you gain 100 lbs. your heart, liver, spleen, etc. have to service all of that extra weight.
There are two types of muscle growth. Power lifters experience Myofibrillar Hypertrophy. Myofibrillar hypertrophy, or "real" muscle growth, is an enlargement of muscle fiber as it gains more myofibrils, things which contract and generate tension. The muscle gets stronger and harder. Myofrbrillar hypertrophy is accomplished by training with heavy weights.
Bodybuilders experience sarcoplasmic hypertrophy, which is a worthless increase in the volume of muscle cell fluid as the result of high rep training. The fluid, sarcoplasm, accounts for 25%-30% of the muscle's size.
Mitochondria, the "power plants" of the cell, which, when well developed, make up 20-30% of the muscle's size and also grow from high reps. The same applies to capillaries: an early eighties study found twice as many capillaries per muscle fiber in elite bodybuilders than in normal subjects. Needless to say, building things like capillaries or increasing cell fluid volume is form above function; I have no respect for that.
I am 6'1" and 180#. I can deadlift 450# for 2 sets of 5 reps. The beefy bodybuilders in my gym couldn't dream of pulling that much weight. Instead, they stick to their sissy machines. I can do 27 pull-ups; while few of them could do three, in good form.
In other words, I am far stronger and I don't look like an idiot.
I strongly recommend the two sites below.
