Dogs do NOT commonly get ear mites. No there is nothing you should try before seeing the vet. A vet needs to make a proper diagnosis and prescribe proper treatment.
Self medicating can cause serious damage to the ear, make the problem worse even cause deafness.

Dogs usually get infectionns not mites. In some rare situations i have seen some toy breed puppies that did have mites. If your dog is an adult dog, then it may be a bacterial infection/yeast infectio/or both. The only way to know for sure is to get him to the vet. You could try cleaning his ears with cotton balls and ear cleaner from the pet store. Never use Q-tips you could rupture the ear drum. If you pet acts painful, stop and get him to the vet, it could also be a foreign body like a foxtail, depending on which state you live in. Hope this helps

Don't try anything until you find out for sure that it is ear mites. If it isn't ear mites, then what ever you buy won't help.Take your dog to the vet first and then they will give you something.

There are a couple of over the counter products but they don't work very well. In my experience it's cheaper and faster just to go to the vet. They have a great ear drop that isn't too expensive and lasts FOREVER! :) Only drawback is you have to keep it refrigerated and, as you can guess, dogs aren't too happy about 3 frigid drops trickling in each ear! Well worth it though.
