Why would he try to defeat God when he knows it is impossible for him to do so?

He was one of God's angels for a long time so he would obviously know that God has infinite power and he didn't.

From a lot of your answers Satan must be really stupid, which makes you wonder how he got to be so powerful in the first place and how he ever managed to do be a master of deception

Because according to the Christian dogma Satan must be the most stupid creature in existence. I mean all he has to do is read Revelation to find out exactly what is going to happen. Here we have an entity that was clever enough to hijack the universe and even the godhead, and yet he’s apparently illiterate.

Satan reads Revelation and says “Duh, look I gotta do that and if I do I’ll burn forever in hell. Should I do it? Yeah why not…”

It’s only more of that Christian bubble gum theology.

Hello friend.
You are right. Satan does know that God is soverign (see James 2:19, Mark 5:6ff). Furthermore, the Bible clearly shows that there is no contest between Satan and God. (Note, for example, how quickly the fight is over after the two armies are arrayed for battle in Revelation 19:19-20!)

So, why did Satan rebel in the first place if he knew the picture would look bad for him in the end?

Think about this for a minute. If you only obey God because you fear that he will punish you, do you think that you will be close to him for eternity? Aren't we also suppose to LOVE God and his ways (Matthew 22:37)?

Satan doubtlessly knew that God had complete power; yet, he did not love God nor his ways. He hated God and his ways. His rebellion, his banishment, and his eternal punishment are natural developments considering the nature of God and the actions of Satan.

Besides, a lot of PEOPLE claim to believe in God but continue to live lives opposed to him. Read James 2:19-24. People KNOW smoking may kill them but continue to do it because they LIKE it and HATE not smoking! Knowledge isn't everything. Having the right heart is the other important part!

I have a theory on this. There is no Satan. Not in the sense of an independent bad guy. He works for god.He is an employ and he also gets the bad publicity rap. Somebody has to do gods dirty work so they came up with the fallen Angel thing to keep gods hands clean fro evil deeds. The alternative poses a serious question. If god who is omnipotent and omniscient among other superlatives and absolutes, can not handle a fallen angel then he has none of the above attributes. Then there exists another super being just as eternal and powerful as god. Another god!. I think they are one and the same the god/satan persona.

Most of what people believe about Satan are compilations of very short references from 5 separate Old and New Testament books. They combine them to make one complete identity for Satan. That way of connecting the dots is stupid. The only consistent theme is temptation. Man and woman tempted in the garden. Jesus tempted in the desert. Tempting Job to curse God. Man is continually tempted to question God and try to replace Him with ourselves. Tempted to put ourselves in the place of authority. You say it is stupid that Satan would do that but human kind is constantly trying put ourselves in God's place, control our own lives. I think ultimately you are saying "WE" are stupid and to that I must agree. We are the ones in defiance to God. We are not in the middle of the tug of war between God and Satan. We are at the other end of the rope.

In Buddhism they have what are called wrathful dieties, who look like demons, whose purpose it is to bring you your worst fears, so that you may overcome them. Maybe Satan is a sort of trainer. Once I was in a terrible state of terror, feeling attacked by an evil entity, which continued until I finally scolded God for not helping me. I accused him of failing to keep his promise to protect me from the molestation of demons. I heard a voice say, "But you don't need help." That was such a shocking idea to me that I actually looked and somehow saw what I truly am (what we all are) and I saw that the voice had spoken the truth. What I am cannot be touched, cannot be harmed. Yes I will die, and probably this personality connected to this bag of bones will disintegrate having no skin to make it seem separate. But that's not all I am. This view was the greatest gift I have ever, and maybe will ever receive. I think he works for God, whether he knows it or not. Maybe, like us, he has forgotten that he is a radiant being of light in disguise. Whatever he may have done, was done in a state of delusion, just like us. I hope that Jesus will insist upon his presence in heaven like he has done for us.

In any case, the story of Lucifer's Fall is an attempt to explain how God came to allow evil to come into the world. It's got holes in it big enough to drive a truck through.

maybe that very story hints that the power of god can be questioned.

was it not another loyal angel that banished Lucifer and not god himself.

people and gods are only as strong as their closest friends and supporters.

what would have happened if Gabriel and Michael had joined the 2nd in command.

or is it possible that lucifer did in fact destroy or banish god and take over his kingdom. seems possible when you thing about the relevation. the engine of the appoclylapyse could easily be the christian religion. (what with all of the convert of die philosophy). Satanism on the other hand is a very peacful belief system.

who is good and who is evil.

could not the vast majority of the world simply be being fooled by satan in god's cloak for the last 1500 years. he is afterall the master of deception and lies.

I'll bite on this...

Maybe it wasn't impossible and god just wants everyone to think that- maybe god needs satan to justify his own existance- maybe god still likes satan and likes to check in on him from time to time- maybe god and satan are two old drunk men fighting over religion in a dirty bar in the middle of nowhere... maybe hell is the men's room in that bar. Where would your good be without your evil?

Well, either...

he is really, really stupid, way too stupid to be of any real harm, or

the stories written about him are inaccuate, or

he doesn't even exist.

A better question might be, why did God create him in the first place, knowing all the horrific suffering, sin, damnation and death that he would bring upon God's beloved mankind and the rest of his wonderful creation? Would you create a child if you knew that the child would be the next Hannible Lechter?

Satan is nothing but an imitation of God. What he tries to do is to copy what God has create and re-do it again. What he tries to be is to be as great as God.

So while God gives freedom for people to choose, Satan told a lie that he will make all the people be in the right side of God. Although he will make people die and commit crime all over the world.

But what God said is all true, he will still make the bad people die in his left side with Satan and make the good, justice people live forever with God, Jesus Christ and Saint Spirit. Once they have baptism in the Church of Latter-day Saints, and God will judge who is wrong, who is right. Who will be punished in the left side of his, and who will enjoy forever happiness with him.

nas: You hit the "nail" right on the "head" ! As a Christian, I can answer you with this. Satan became jaded and began to entertain thoughts of over-throwing God, as you have stated. Satan, became warped in his thought process from sin and is still as warped, thinking that he can thwart Jesus Christ at His [Jesus's] return to the earth. Although God would forgive Satan should Satan decide to repent, Satan has become twisted and refuses to repent; therefore, God can not forgive Satan due to his [Satan's] pride, in his refusal to repent and accept God's extended forgiveness. Sin causes people to become mentally impaired (in comparison to God) ! Satan is called also, the "Author of confusion".
