That is a very intriguing question and I am not so very sure that the answers so far have thought it through.

Identical twins are "natural clones" of eachother, so would not necessarily have different smells. Now obviously this would depend on their age and their general activities (ie, if we are talking adult twins and one works at McDonalds and one works in a cedar mill - even blind aunt Betty could tell them apart :), never mind the dog). Two young children that live in the same environment and share a room, perhaps exchange beds (most twins I know try it at least to fool babysitters or family other than parents and siblings) and clothing... I'm not so sure they would smell all that different.

I would suggest that even a dog will not use -=only=- scent to determine identification, so they should be able to identify the differences in much the same way parents learn to, by subtle differences in voice or movement or manner.

I think this is a darn fine question though :))

Yes... differences in voice, body language are far more evident to a dog than just physical appearance. For example my sister and I look ALOT alike, but that did not confuse my dog, what did confuse him was our vocal similarity.. he had a hard time distinguishing between our voices but easily told us apart because of our body language and basic appearance which I assure you is quite close to identical twins. People often mistake us for one another visually.. but my dog had only a problem with the voice.. when my sister would say something he would think it was me, or vice versa.. it was quite funny actually. I think that a dog would easily tell the difference between identical twins visually, scent wise and body language, voice etc I think physical appearance is of the least importance to dogs as far as recognition goes. My dogs are more likely to recognize a person by smell and sound over appearance any day.. they get easily fooled by big coats sunglasses, masks etc so I think they rely more on other ways of identification.

Ps I think its because no matter how much you look alike you can never move the same as in walking, hand gestures, facial expressions, body movements in general. Even if you look exactly alike you never walk, talk, move, or express yourself the same... my sister and I sound alike to my dog, but he had no problem telling who was who by our scent and by our demeanor, habits etc. If 2 people look, smell and sound alike a dog could still tell the difference because no matter how alike 2 people can be they are always unique in some way be it thier movements, attitude, energy, demeanor, or personality. twins are identical in looks but not in personality or behaviour and that is what matters most to a dog in distinguishing between 2 people. Also just because 2 people live and sleep in the same environment does not mean they use the same shampoo, deodorant, personal hygiene, perfume etc etc dogs can smell even the faintest scent that wouldnt be noticable to a human.. dosnt have to be as evident as mcdonalds or cedar.. it could merely be a difference in shampoo a dog relies on to differentiate or one person may have bad oral hygiene and the other does not... I would think overall a dog would be better able to tell the difference between twins than even the parents of said twins.

HUH?????

Do you mean, 2 people are identical twins and can the dog tell them apart?? Of course he can, we all have our own scent.

Yes. Dogs notice subtle differences in a lot of things that we seem to miss. Even slight different mannerisms and different pitches of voice.

Yes, as many dogs rely on scent, to identify someone, and not physical appearance.

same twins could have the comparable face, physique, etc....yet that doesn't recommend you are able to desire to gown them precisely the comparable. provide them personalities. provide on a quick hair decrease and supply the different a bowl decrease. enable them to precise themselves and you will see that whether they look the comparable, they are 2 very distinctive human beings.
