Try glucosomine (spelling) supposedly helps your body produce lube for the moving surfaces and reduces the resulting pain.

I don't know about being an expert, but ...
I'm a long-term sufferer of knee and joint pain with family histories of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. There are a few things that have helped me along the way.
1. Glucosamine / Chondroiton supplements (with or without MSM) have greatly improved my joint health. Right now I'm only taking 1/3 of the recommended dose and I'm already sold on the product. Talk to you doctor about this and any other supplements you might hear of before starting as to avoid drug interactions with anything you may be taking already.
2. Don't run unless you're being chased by something intending to eat you. Running is harsh on your knees, as are treadmills. Instead try "fast-walking" or if you're a gym member use the elliptical trainers. Swimming is also an excellent cardio workout and almost zero impact on any joint.
3. Weight bearing exercise (such as a leg press) is crucial. You don't want to try to have monster legs, but strengthening the supporting muscles will improve your overall knee condition.
4. In addition to doing warm-up and cool-down exercises with your normal workout, try an exercise form that emphasizes stretching and flexibility such as yoga or t'ai chi. If you're near a city of any appreciable size there should be a variety of class styles and times for you. Try out a few of the exercise forms and see what works well for you.
These are the things that have proven beneficial to me, personally. Bounce some of the ideas off your doc and see what you come up with.
Good luck!

I have heard (from my doctor as well as from a friend who's tried it) that glucosamine is very good for the knee joints.
I am almost 46, and my knees have been deteriorating slowly for the last several years. Last fall, one knee gave out and started being a chronic problem.
The doctor I saw said it might be torn cartilege and went on to tell me how to check for that and how to fix it... I told him I needed a cheaper diagnosis, and he recommended glucosamine pills. He said it would take about a month for it to kick in, but that it was really very good for the knee joints.
The pills are about as big as a small Honda, so I lost interest in taking them for an entire month (I'm more inspired by "instant" results...). Recently, I was talking to a friend about my achy knees, and he, too, brought up the glucosamine thing... he said that he, too, was into the "instant results" thing and that the size of the pills had been a turn-off... but when he got desperate, he went ahead and started taking them, and he said that it has helped him immensely.
I think there is a brand called Flexamin at the grocery store. My dad (in his 70's and very active) also swears by glucosamine. My job requires a lot of knee - bending, so I will probably be starting back up on the glucosamine, myself. Maybe I'll try breaking them up...

If you don't use it you loose it. Stay active and let your knee TELL YOU how to be gentle but persistent. I'm not a doctor but I am older and my body feels worse if I don't think and act young. VERY CAREFULLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
