He recently had an MRI. It was perfect. Now, he has to go to Children's Hospital for some other tests. Someone recently told me that he could be allergic to wheat. All three doctors that he has seen said it is not food allergies, as his symptoms would be different. Such as, he wakes up in the middle of the night with migrains. He gets them after eating, after playing too hard, while doing nothing at all. They have him on medicine (which is temporary, and I absolutley HATE to bandaid the problem, but the headaches have stopped), that is making him gain weight like crazy.

Has anyone else ever gone through this? What was the outcome. I have researched and researched this and nothing makes sense. None of the causes of migrains in kids fit his lifestyle. And everything I seem to think it could be, the doctors contradict me and steer me away from. I am desperate to figure out how to help him!!!

At Children's Hospital, he will be seeing a neurologist. This has been an issue off and on for over 4 years. We have altered our diets, changed bedtimes, avoided fast food and artificial/preservatives. He is completely healthy otherwise, and has not experienced any injuries. His school is aware of this condition and pays close attention to him to watch what he eats and monitors his activities...

The weight gain is caused by the medicine to prevent headaches. So we are basically eliminating one problem only to create another!!!

i had infrequent headaches like those with the vomiting when i was a kid and growing up. the worst thing about them for me was that my mom never seemed to take it seriously, so i think it is wonderful that you care so much about your son's problem! i don't have a severe problem like your son's, so ibuprofen works for me. but i am glad you are going to doctors. pain-free is the best.

oh, and also i read that certain foods can kickstart the migraines. fatty foods, msg, processed meats, cheese, tomatoes, wine, caffeine, chocolate, etc. once i got a horrible migraine and realized i had eaten a meal with almost all of those ingredients! makes me ill just thinking about it. anyway good luck, stay calm and nurturing to your sweet son, hang in there, sounds like you are doing a great job, i will pray for him :)

taking a medicine that stops the migraines isn't "band-aiding" the problem. it is *stopping* the problem.

Sometimes what causes the migraines to happen is never found. Yes, some dietary items can make them worse. And, yes, mom, an allergy *can* bring on a migraine. One of the problems with specialists is that they only look for problems within their specialty.

I've had migraines for over thirty years. Like your son, they would blindside me (literally, I get the aura) and I'd fall to the floor and vomit. No cause has ever been found. And believe me, I've had ever test that could be thought up in the past three decades.

H***, I even found a voodoo practitioner and begged for help. Only way that helped was that the room was darkened.

I'm on a migraine preventative now. FINALLY one that now works for me. Oddly, it didn't work several years ago when I first tried it. But it's given me a measure of my life back. I no longer have to wear sunglasses in the house because lights are too bright.

Let the neurologist test him. But also take him to an allergist, it can't hurt. Be aware though that your son may have to learn how to adjust his life to this. It can be done.

Good luck.

Thyroid and Celiac disease(gluten sensitivity) can cause migraines. One of the most effective medicines for adults to prevent migraines is topamax. It comes in a sprinkle form for kids. It has side effects too, but people lose weight on this medication. That is strange to wake up in the middle of the night with a migraine. I hope you find the cause.

My son had migrains from an early age . So, did and does his dad.
Things that set him off were flashing lights, stress and too much sugar

You might never know the reason why. You will be able to manage it.

There are many triggers known and unknown
