No, it was meant to be a lifestyle choice.
Christian was a name that surfaced in Antioch, if I recall correctly. It is in the Bible.
The Bible also cautions us that there will be false teachers and false doctrines professed, and that divisions in the Church are to be discouraged. We are to remain faithful, and to compare what these people say to what is actually in the Bible to determine what is correct.
The Church that was started up on the first Pentacost after the Crucifiction really has no name, so the denominational "religions" out there are man-made not God inspired. Now it gets confusing when you cannot label your congregation, and I find that many of the congregations out there that use the title "Church Of Christ" in their congregational names are pretty close to what is described in the Bible as a true Church congregation. There are other named churches that also follow the Biblical example.
I found my congregation by visiting several, and talking to people. I was eventually invited to visit my current congregation and felt "at home" on the first visit. They are biblically based. Every one of their traditions either has a scriptural basis to it, or it is clearly labeled as tradition, not doctrine.

Read the gospels carefully and you will discover that Jesus told His followers to follow the Holy Spirit not Him!!!!! When are christians going to wake up to the fact that trying to follow Jesus or His teachings is impossible. The Holy Spirit is pragmatic and given a chance will show you how to apply spiritual principles to real problems and conflicts in your life.

Jesus set up his church before his death. The problem was the Apostles were all killed with out passing on the mantle of the leadership of a Prophet and Apostles. That left a void in the church. Many different beliefs then emerged from no clear leadership from the Lord himself who would direct the Prophets and Apostles. The church was called The Church of Jesus Christ.

I must thank you for such knowledge you have shed on all those whom don't understand that the whole Christianity is all made up and all holidays are invented by the pagans and the non believers!
no it was made up primarily by Paul who was obsessed with Christ in an unhealthy fashion if the book be looked at from another angle you must dig how Paul was obsessed with Jesus just crazy Paul lost his mind long ago and everyone knew it!

NO, and it is NOT a religion. Religions are created by men, that are trying to make a path to God.
Christianity is the exact opposite, it is God reaching down to man providing that path to Him.

Christ meant for us to follow Him...to emulate Him. He established His church on earth to foster this. "Peter, you are rock, and upon this rock I build my church, and the jaws of death shall not prevail against it."
None of us individually has all the answers, or all the understanding. The Church, for 2000 years, has documented and formulated understandings from God. Those who choose to follow Christ, outside of an established religion, lose the benefit of this collective wisdom.
