In ancient civilization, when farming was the main source of food, Earth was given status of God. It was a mystery for ancient men as to how a seed sown in earth can become a tree and yield fruits. Why is it that if it’s left out in sun, it gets dry but when planted in earth, it grows so big? All these trivial questions led to a belief that there is some power/ god inside earth, which makes everything grow. Later on, the disasters like earthquake and volcanic eruptions also strengthen the belief that there is a power beneath, which can yield fruits and also hurt through natural disasters.

But it was the quality of providing food through natural yields, giving birth to new plants and providing cave shelter, which was compared more with a female/ motherly qualities and hence Earth got status of “Mother Earth”.

In poetic sense, it says “ through we dig her heart every day and take the food out and keep on digging until it becomes barren land, we never stop. One fine day we leave her on its own and search for a new shelter, but Thee Mother Earth never complains. And when we return after years again searching food from the same barren land which has become fertile again, it never says no to us and again gives the same love through its yield as our true mother would have given us”

Mother Earth!!!!
First there was no life and no planets in the universe..and then there was something which said life must be there or something else[i dont know that one, sorry] so it was by the good grace of lord shiva-the five avatars ie the directions or so; and the life was formed and then the gayatri mantra..which is holy are supposed to be chanted by Brahmanas according to a faith as hindus believe in..and it is almost same for all the religions

Easy - Mother Earth is the mistress of Al Gore.

And, for your further edification, the love child of Al Gore and Mother Earth will, whether male or female, resemble a cross between Janis Joplin and John Kerry - God help that child.

Yep.

There's no definite answer. Though from my own observation mother earth seems to be derived from the more maternal goddesses.

She is an empowered servant of God. Her original name is Mother Bhumi she is an expansion of Dhurgha or Material nature. She is a real person (goddess) Dhurgha means very difficult to get out of. If one wants to get out of the material world they have to take up the process of self realization and the chanting of the names of God for more info. go to harekrishnatemple.co Read Bhagavad Gita As it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada- tells all

This is the belief that the Earth as our mother. She feeds us, clothes/shelters us, gives us life. We honor her and remember that we cannot own earth, we share it with the other beings and things here. Not such a bad view to take, it predates Cro-Magnon man.

As much as she would have to believe she is, it is not Hillary Rodham-Clinton.

Mother Earth is the Earth that we live on and is Nature.
