It's your SSN. Ignore the rant from jrtcpa@sbcglobal.net; illegals can't claim the EITC since you MUST have an SSN to claim that. An ITIN won't work for EITC. (If he or she was really a CPA as the name implies, they'd already know that.)

Your personal tax ID is your social security number. If you had an incorporated business or business with employees, you would have an employer identification number, EIN, for that business instead of a personal tax id.

In most cases, it's your social security number (in the U.S.) If you are incorporated and have a business license, you'll be issued a tax ID number as well.

It is a number used to file tax returns for people that don't have a Social Security number. It is largely used by illegal aliens, who file tax returns to claim the Earned Income Credit, which allows them to actually pay NEGATIVE tax. They get refunds without paying anything.
