I would say that it would depend on the individual. If the rich man has wealth then he should be spending a lot of it to help others. If he is not, then he is not a good person. The same thing however would hold true for the man who saves for himself if he doesn't bother trying to help others. The material goods one possesses is not a measure of the man...only what he does with it can measure the quality of the man.

The question has the unwritten assumption that being rich is the best thing to be.
To have the best in this life, a person must be kind to others and give of themselves unselfishly. Everything else is hollow and eventually meaningless.
Money only has as much value as the good it is used for.

The initial question reminds me of the movie (Yes, great book) "Lord of the flies". One leader is responsible, wanting fire, code, responsibility, rules, etc. The other wants to hunt, have fun, rule by intimidation, etc.
In the end, we learn life is not fair. the way things should be done fail. Chaos, intimidation, take precedence.

It is better to be hard working. But if you can have a free gift, it is wise to take it. : )
Do you think the hard working guy should refuse the gift or "winning" due to his hard work and own earnings? : )
