First, it seems to me that half the diagreement here is simply a matter of definition; the term "atheist" is interpreted in too many ways to be very useful on this board.
There are some who claim not to know whether God exists or not. These are called agnostics. Agnosticism is not a statement of faith. Unless you mean strong agnosticism, by which I mean the belief that God's existence or nonexistence cannot be objectively known. Is strong agnosticism a statement of faith? As an agnostic, I'm proud to say I don't know.
There are others who claim to know that God does not exist. Someone called these people "strong atheists"; I think that's a precise enough term. Strong atheism, in this sense, is a statement of faith--or at least, it seems that way to me. Despite all the ridiculous arguments I've heard in favor of the existence of God, I have yet to hear a good one for his nonexistence, either.
Enraged Parrot, a lack of evidence in support of something is not the same as evidence against it. Oops--my bad--when you came out as an "atheist" I read it as "strong atheist".
Just Curious, Webster gives several definitions for "faith", the first of which does not mention God. But I see that the word "faith" needs definition as well. Where I have used it, I meant it in the sense of Websters definition 2b: firm belief in something for which there is no proof.

It's just semantics. In a religious or theological context, "faith" means belief (in god) without evidence. Sometimes religious belief stems from revelation, rather than faith. Using this definition, atheists do not have faith, per se. I happen to form all of my beliefs based on evidence and reason, but I'm sure some atheists are different.
In a nonreligious context, everyone has faith in certain things. I have faith that it will rain here in April. So what?

faith (fÄth)
n.
Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing.
Atheism is an idea that can neither be proved nor disproved and naturally would require faith to believe.

I think atheist or atheism is faith actually. Your definition of faith is a little off. Because I don't think anyone can prove 100% that there is NO GOD. Same thing, religion cannot prove 100% that there is God either. So atheism is based on faith!!

Faith is belief without supporting evidence. Atheism is the lack of belief in the existence of all gods. Atheism isn't even a belief, let alone a belief based on faith.
Strong atheism (the belief that there is no god) is technically based on faith, much the same way that my belief that my whole life hasn't been a hallucination is based on faith.

Well, I think it would be fair to say that most people would agree that Faith in Life is a trust, but it is a Faith with no promise that it well be easy or painless!

i believe you're confused on the intended use of faith. as webster defines it, faith is a belief and trust in and loyalty to God. so here faith has a religious connotation to it. this is not the same faith you're describing. faith in that sense is the same kind of faith you have in believing the sun is going to rise every morning. yes it's faith, but it's not religious faith.

That is faith what we do not have is a Faith do not confuse the two.
I have faith that when I put the key in my car ignition and turn - it will start. That is not the same as having Faith in a God or so.

Atheism is simply a lack of belief in your god and all the other made up gods. Takes no faith what so ever to not believe.

I do. And I know, because I'm an atheist.
Faith is defined, quite simply, as belief without evidence. Atheists do not believe that God exists simply because no evidence supports this idea. Thus, no faith. D'you see?
