I heard that when you juice fruits and vegetables, it takes out the fiber, which doesnt bother me because I already get more than enough fiber from other foods I eat. My question is, is fiber the only thing that is taken out, or is there other things that you get from eating them, that you dont get from drinking them. Do you still get all the vitamins and minerals when you juice them.

I am juicing them instead of eating them because eating 5 fruits and vegetables a day is a lot of food, especially when I add it to all the food I already eat. So I figure juicing my own fruits and vegetables will give me the nutrients I need without having to take out something else in my diet. Think about it, who really eats 5 full servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

I'm a registered dietitian.

The easy answer is no, you don't lose anything else but the fiber. You will get most, if not all of the vitamins and minerals when you juice them.

However, in the food matrix of fiber and other plant parts, there may be nutrients (e.g. phytochemicals) that are trapped. So when you leave behind the fiber, you also leave behind these phytochemicals. We don't really know all there is to know about why fruits and vegetables are so healty. We think it's the vitamins and minerals, but studies show that when you supplement with these vitamins and minerals, you don't get the same benefits as you do from eating the whole fruits from which they come.

Just something to think about... but drink your juice... you'll get your vitamins and minerals just fine.

Good luck.

The answer is yes. However, why not just eat them instead of juicing? Fiber is important in your diet, and if you're not getting fiber from fruits and veggies, you're not getting enough. Whole grains are also good sources, but to me, there's nothing more satisfying than the crunch of an apple, a carrot or celery. Juices that you buy in the store will not give you the same nutrition as whole fruits and vegetables that you juice yourself. But the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is from the whole fruits and vegetables. .

You get all the good stuff. Just be careful with the fruit juices because of the sugar.
