Contrary to the previous posters rude comment, you are not pretty much screwed. Federal grants, like loans are mostly based ony our income. Basically the less income you have the better for getting loans and grants. I am not an expert on grants (I deal more with the loan aspect) but if you fill out a FAFSA then you can find out eligibility for grants and loans. Federal loans are always an option if you can't get grants. these DO have to be paid back, but you wait until you are finished with school to start paying them. First you should decide what school you would like to go to and then talk to a Financial Aid Counselor there and they should be able to go over your options with you! Hope this helps a little!

Have you tried the older students' office or the nontraditional students office? They might have some financial aid programs for individuals like yourself. If you have your bachelors and want to retrain, you will not qualify for Pell Grants. Was your ex supposed to help pay down some of the bills? If so, it might be worth your while to file a contempt with the courts on it. I will list some places that should help find some money for college.

First, the college's financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major's website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, fill out the FAFSA form if you have not completed your bachelors degree and plan on getting your associates degree. FAFSA will not cover certificate programs. It becomes available January 1 for the upcoming fall semester or quarter.

Fourth, check with your human resources office at your current job. There might be a tuition assistance program. Some places of employment have one.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites, but the best I have located is Scholarship Experts since they have a very thorough and lengthy survey to complete compared to Fastweb. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

Depending on your income, you may likely qualify for state grants - you would have to attend an approved school in the state you reside in.

Check with your financial aid office at the school you want to attend - because some loans are backed by the government, they may loan you money even with bad credit, because if you default, the government will cover it.

Also, after a certain number of years, you can get some things removed. Check your credit, and start contesting the bad stuff.

I had the same thing happen and I was told by everyone that if you have bad credit, you couldn't get a student loan. That is SO NOT TRUE! Go to school and apply for financial aid. You'll be fine. I am now in my second semester. By the way, because of my student loans, my credit score has gone up a few points!

There must be something, some loan program or whatever. Go to your local technical college, would you be interested in the LPN program?

You can work as a nurse's aide once you complete like 3 months of classes.

You need to go to the university and the technical college and the community college to see what programs they can recommend. Why can't you get FAFSA student grants if you have never had one before?

There are government loans & grants, and then there are private loans & scholarships.

try to aim for grants/scholarships more... they are not to be paid back. its confusing sometimes, but just keep applying. Scholarships usually have a 1 or 2 page application, and require an essay. Take your time with the essay, so yours stands out.

every big (and small) company you see (manufacturer, orgs, corps and groups also) all have grants and scholarships they hand out like candy. Walmart, Kmart, Target, Coke, computer companies etc etc etc

here are some links with a HUGE list of what is available. some you will need to copy and paste into a new window. also, fastweb (take the time to fill it in) will search databases and get back to you with a list of scholarships you qualify for.

Also contact all mens, womens associations in your state, they almost always have grants & scholarships. What ever field you are going into, contact the orgs, associations etc for them; Also check with professional organizations related to your career interests, such as the American Bar Association or the American Medical Association. they also always have scholarships. Research and dig, call then write. Its all worth it.

OVER apply; it doesnt hurt to have too many, and the extra funds can help with housing.
