We just painted the living room- (the paint was from walmart, its darby creek) its a tan/brown color. The furniture in the living room is all black. (black couch, end tables, picture frams, lamps) The carpet is light- its a tan color(but were going to get new carpet, so i'm not worried about matching with the carpet. So the question is what color should the curtains be???

I would definitely add a splash of colour to that room - but I'm wild like that. :)

With those colours, a toned (read: grey-down) teal would add a really dramatic punch, so long as you work it into the rest of the room. That Darby Creek is really just a darker tone of orange and yellow, so what you've got there is a complimentary colour scheme. Adding white will add balance to the room. This is a very modern, ultra-cool look - which I'm a huge fan of.

If you want less drama, I would suggest going for a pale cream or beige (I hate beige, personally). Because everything will stay on the warm side of the colour wheel, you've created a very harmonious and calming space. Also, by keeping everything neutral, you're sure not to offend anybody. Very vanilla, but pleasant to the eyes.

If you want to keep a bit of the drama, but not quite as wild as a teal or aqua blue, a red would spruce things up but still keep everything on the same, warm side. Red also produces lots of energy - heart beats are fastest in a red room. it also encourage eating, so if you want a lively choice, this is it.

I hope that was helpful.

I would go with pomegranite. A nice orangey red, more red than orange, but not with blue undertones like for a burgundy. That will read warm and since your colors are spicey, this will add to the drama. Your other colors are warm, so this will fit. If, however, you want more on the cool side, a light teal or turquoise will work. Think the spring fashions with the chocolate brown and light bluish accent. That's the shade. Still a pop of color, but in the cooler tones.

Some kind of pattern since everything else is solid. There are some beautiful black and tan prints out there at the fabric shops that would make beautiful curtains.

Do you want warmth or cool. For warmth maybe a burgundy maroon color. Or for cool maybe a turqoise color. Accent the room with some matching colored items maybe. i would steer away from any neutrals because you want the room to be full of life as well as comfort.

I agree with the red (or some other) accent color that brings out other subtle colors in the room. Otherwise it will be monotone and not as exciting!

What accent colors are you using for your art decor and other items (rug maybe)? I would pick a color that matches your decor so that it brings out the other color in the decor and doesn't look too monotone.
