You DON'T KNOW. You're not going to know for ten days. YOu might call the police tomorrow, see if someone can get a copy of the report sooner.
You don't even know if the other guy has insurance, or if it's been cancelled. So you don't know.
Save your cab receipts, the other guy's insurance should pay a limited amount of that. Like, up to $25 a day. Get a bus pass, or pay for your own rental. Take your car to wherever you want to repair it, have them do the estimate. If you can't afford to have the car repaired, you'll have to wait. If you CAN, have them fix it, save the damaged parts.
Legal solutions? It's not going to be fast! You can sue the guy that hit you, after you find out who he is. But that doesn't mean you'll get any MONEY.

You're making something very simple rather complicated....you have a duty to mitigate your damages meaning not incur any unnecessary charges resulting from this loss. If your vehicle is driveable, drive it. If it's not then you can either do what you're doing, take taxi's, or you can go rent a car on your own and authorize the repairs at the shop of your choice. Once the police report is available get a copy of it and contact the insurance company listed on it & file a claim. Ask them how much will they reimburse you for "loss of use," and comply with their requests. If your vehicle is under repair tell them where it is so they can go inspect it & issue payment for the damages.
Just because you failed to get the other parties information on scene which you could have done while you were waiting for the cops doesn't mean you can rack up charges for a rental or taxi if your car is driveable. Your failure to carry the appropriate coverage on your car isn't the other persons fault, it's your own. Now you have to wait, but you also have to use some common sense and not whine & complain which is what you're doing...

First problem was not getting HIS insurance information and waiting to the police to get it. In any accident this is the FIRST thing that should be done. Exchanging the names and insurance information. This way you at least have a company that your insurance company can contact. NEVER EVER Leave an accident with out getting the name and insurance of the person you have hit or have been hit by. Now if you where hauled off in an ambulance because you where too injured to get this information then I am sorry you do need to wait. However his insurance company should have contacted yours about payment for medical expenses. If you want Legal advice you need to seek a lawyer and not waste time posting your problems on Yahoo answers. Last time I checked there where not a lot of Lawyers who where automotive techs. And the avg. Joe. That’s what we have here in this forum.

assuming that there is no question that the other party is 100% at fault; all you can do now is wait. It would have been best to get that info at the scene, but to late now. I would go ahead and get an estimate where you want to get it fixed and be ready. Go into a car rental and see if you can go ahead and rent on the hopes the other party is insured and will pay you car rental. If not have the rental costs ready to give the other company. If the other party turned the claim into their company you may hear from them soon(hopefully). You might try to call the investigating officer and ask him if he could get the info for you. He can if he will.

Call the other guy's insurance company and insist on an early estimate at a dealer of your choice and then insist that they pay for a rental car until your car is fixed. You do not have wait until the police report is filed, you can still initiate proceedings against the insurance company. Good luck.

I wish I could help but you don't have any legal rights because you weren't carrying full coverage on your auto. You have no choice but wait for the report and contact that insurance company. Every insurance if different, so there is no way anyone would know. Sorry about your accident.
