going out of your way to please someone else with no reward what so ever is quite foolish in my opinion. so my question is, why be "nice" and "good"? if your answer is god, then are you saying you are good for the sake of getting into heaven?

I always get something in return.

It makes me feel good to have done good.

If I needed anything more, it wouldn't have been 'good', it would have been 'negotiation'.

Not everyone does good for the sake of a god; plenty of humanists and atheists are involved in goodwill gestures. Some people feel a desire to help others out on the path of life. Almost everyone, once or twice on the way, has had a rough go of it, and maybe someone was there to help them out through a bad patch. In return, when they are able, they feel it is only just to help someone else out who is also having a rough time. For some people, the knowledge that they have in some way relieved someone else's suffering is enough.

Being "nice" and "good" is a way of showing respect to others and making the world a more peaceful place. Anyone who would only be kind to another person if he were rewarded is no better than an animal. What makes us human is our ability to judge between right and wrong, truth and lies. Christians obey the commandments of God not to "get into heaven", but because they love Him and wish to please Him as a way of saying thank you for all He has done for us. God knows our hearts and our motives; he cannot be decieved by someone who is only looking out for himself.

It's just nice to be nice I guess. You should try it. There is no such thing as pure altruism. People like the feeling they get when they do something 'good' is all, whether it's to please God or not. Some think they are getting a ticket to heaven some are just happy with the warm glow.

because wants and self-centeredness gives one tunnel vision and limits their perspective. A " needy " person is a sign of emotional immaturities and limited vision
