Tell your friend he needs to speak with Warden. If the Warden takes the guard's side - then your friend needs to ask for the "Omnbudsman" who is a prison mediator who steps in when prisoner's are being mistreated. He has to be careful though.... if he's in there for a long time - complaining about the guard could make his life miserable because the C.O.'s (Corrections Officers) stick together - like cops. It's a brotherhood. But it sounds like his life is already miserable, so perhaps they have nothing to lose by getting the Ombudsman involved.
Good luck! Tell your friend to stay strong.

It keep him alone. Also, inmates are required so much sun light a day. IF, they want to go out. Normally in Solitary he alone on the yard and they not get much yard, mainly sun. Guards are usually posted above on a cat walk away from him.
People are social creatures, we like someone around to talk. By putting him alone it a type of punishment.

He may be making it up. I do business with prisons and they talk and joke to a certain percent with inmates. If they have a moth on them or cause trouble guards have little or no patience for them. If they give the guards no problems they give the inmates no problems.
