Which is the best caliber to choose? and why?

.45-70

The brass is readily availible and the it would be a ashame to waste that rifle on some smallish bore diameter.

The .45-70 is all you will ever need to hunt with in the lower 48. It handloads with ease. Lots of load data out there. Lots of bullets choices too.

I'd stick with the 45-70. Ammo is readily available. Lots of reloading data is available as well.
