I don't want to be another one of those ppl that always asks about diets on here but I need to know if this is any good. I'm 190 and pretty well built, but I need to drop a few. Dorm food here is killing me so I just eat a very large salad twice a day and drink two protein shakes called amplify which is heavy in protein and nothing else. I'm very strict about it, no meats, not even bred. I try for fruits but it's limited around here. Am I forgetting anything I need? Is this a good plan to slim down and tone up?

p.s. I just put lettuce in the salad and I use straight vinegar for dressing. I also work out like a mad man every single day, either a 6-8 mile run or at least an hour in the weight room.

I doubt you are getting much overall nutrition from the salads alone, which could hamper weight loss. You may need to add a nutritional supplement to the mix. It may also help regulate your metabolism if you eat small meals every few hours rather than just two large meals twice a day.

Wow. That is a hard question. I am also a student living off dorm food and right about 9pm everynight I ruin my entire day of dieting with a big bag of sweet sweet smart food popcorn... Or, I used to at least. I am really impressed that you went out of your way to eat salad; Seeing as your diet is so healthy, and you are still having a hard time, I would suggest to you the same diet that I am on. I spend most of my time trying the best way to lose weight. So far I have found that 5 days of No carb dieting, paired with 5 days of vegen dieting works best. That means 5 days of almost no fruits and vegies... only meat, eggs and cheese... and then five days of ONLY fruits, vegies and soy milk. Its great because right when you think you just can't take it anymore, you switch over to a new diet, and so far I have lost an average of 5 pounds a week. Although I have only done this for three weeks, so it will most likely level out after a little while. Keep exercising, and don't give up on yourself. Goodluck.

Hey you S-L-O-W down. Your diet is not healthy at all! You are starving your body! I have eaten dorm food before and I know it is not healthy. They should have a salad bar section and if they don't , shame on them. They do however have other veggies besides salad. If you are running as much as you say you are, you are burning lean muscle mass. Not a good thing if you are trying to tone up. Your body is starving for protein. There is nothing wrong with meat. Baked chicken breast, fish, and turkey are all good sources. 100% Wheat bread is good also. Protein shakes should not be used as a primary source of protein. You should buy your food at the store since you are in college funds might not permit that but you have to do more than you are. Please my friend your diet has to change soon, or your body is going to let you know it in a bad way.

Think about what you're putting in that salad. The word "salad" can be very deceiving as diet food. A lot of the add-ins are quite fattening (think dressing, cheese, etc.) Also, a lot of foods that are high in protein are fattening as well (e.g. raisins and nuts). Just try to eat these things in moderation. Good luck.

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

You need any kind of fruit or veggie. Protein shakes are great but you need natural protein too. If you don't have all that good stuff the protein will not be absorbed into the body right. And you need more than plain iceberg lettuce. You need greener lettuce for the iron and fiber. I know its hard but the college has to offer some fruit and veggies, its required of them for the students that live there. They have to offer it.
