How can we be sure the Bible has not been changed?

“In the number of ancient MSS. [manuscripts] attesting a writing, and in the number of years that had elapsed between the original and the attesting MSS., the Bible enjoys a decided advantage over classical writings [those of Homer, Plato, and others]. . . . Altogether classical MSS. are but a handful compared with Biblical. No ancient book is so well attested as the Bible.”—The Bible From the Beginning (New York, 1929), P. Marion Simms, pp. 74, 76.

A report published in 1971 shows that there are possibly 6,000 handwritten copies containing all or part of the Hebrew Scriptures; the oldest dates back to the third century B.C.E. Of the Christian Greek Scriptures, there are some 5,000 in Greek, the oldest dating back to the beginning of the second century C.E. There are also many copies of early translations into other languages.

In the introduction to his seven volumes on The Chester Beatty Biblical Papyri, Sir Frederic Kenyon wrote: “The first and most important conclusion derived from the examination of them [the papyri] is the satisfactory one that they confirm the essential soundness of the existing texts. No striking or fundamental variation is shown either in the Old or the New Testament. There are no important omissions or additions of passages, and no variations which affect vital facts or doctrines. The variations of text affect minor matters, such as the order of words or the precise words used . . . But their essential importance is their confirmation, by evidence of an earlier date than was hitherto available, of the integrity of our existing texts.”—(London, 1933), p. 15.

It is true that some translations of the Bible adhere more closely to what is in the original languages than others do. Modern paraphrase Bibles have taken liberties that at times alter the original meaning. Some translators have allowed personal beliefs to color their renderings. But these weaknesses can be identified by comparison of a variety of translations.
Suppose that you were the owner of a factory and that you posted a list of rules for your workers. If some enemy changed what you had written, what would you do? Would you not correct what had been changed? In the same way, God does not allow people to change the truth of his Word, the Bible.
Those who have tried to change the teachings of God’s Word have not succeeded. When we compare the Bible that we have today with ancient copies of the Bible, they are the same. This shows that the Bible has not been changed over the years.
Many churches changed their message. Priests and preachers gave up teaching that God requires obedience. Instead, many taught that each individual must decide for himself what is right and what is wrong. Trying to gain popularity, some religious leaders claimed that God accepts you no matter how you live. Such teaching calls to mind what the Bible foretold: “There will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled.”—2 Timothy 4:3.

In it's eariler days, the Bible was constantly being edited in large meetings of clergy called Synods. Bishops hashed out what would and would not go into the Bible and how it would all be worded.

Since the official canon of the Bible was established in the Synod of Hippo in 393, the Bible has been translated and altered by a variety of various sects of Christianity (most significantly during the Protestant Reformation) The very fact that several versions of the Bible exist today is proof of the fact that is has been reguarly altered.

To find more concrete backing that "What DonSoze said" just try searching for Synod.

If my memory serves correctly, it was changed at the Council of Nicaea in 325. It may have been a different council. Anyway, the bishops got together and decided which books would go into the Bible. That is why the Gospels of Judas and Mary were left out.
The Bible has been changed numerous times through translation. Your friend obviously forgot this. The wording has changed so much. Translators might also have added their own stuff in, for good or for bad.

I have respect or Islam, but if your friend believes in something else, such as Christianity, it is not your place to challenge her beliefs. By the way, there are many versions of the Christian bible, such as the King James version, and others which escape my mind currently. However, the King James version is considered by most scholars to be the least "corrupted" version. I know that Muslims believe the Koran is the only uncorrupted holy scripture, but any books that are translated from different languages contain certain differences.

"Changed"?????? What do you mean??? We have very old manuscripts that modern Bibles are translated from. There has been no change, only translations into different languages. The Catholic church added the apocryphal books to their Bible around 1660-but that does not affect any others. The original Bible contained 66 books, the modern Bible contains the same books. There has been no change. As our language changes over time, we modernize the language in the Bible but do not change it.

The Bible wasn't changed. The discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls (which date back before Jesus) prove the accuracy of the Bible today. Having translated the scrolls, it was determined that the only differences seen were very minor, and did not affect the meaning in any way.

What do you mean by 'changed'? It has not been changed. When copied from manuscript to manuscript the scribes would copy it word for word and then double check it. At this point they would count the words per line, the words per page, and the letters per page and if even one number was off they would completely destroy it and start over.

And for you: drwoo
How are you going to state a lot of crap about how the Bible is wrong and quote Jesus? You are saying that we should believe that quote by Jesus but not any other words that he said?

Try this for me. When you spend the years of your life searching for satisfaction in whatever YOU happen to decide when you wake-up in the morning and never find it, I will tell you how to satisfy that longing.

Well the Bible says in Galatians 1:6-8

6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

So if your friend reads this, she will not be able to accept Islam since it says that an angel came down from heaven and preached another gospel.

the bible was never changed.............
it always contained lies and deceptions that very ignorant, brain-washed / brain-dead people believe that it is the word of their god.....................

Here's the Solution to prevail past the bible and religion:

Create a private, personal, direct, divine Relationship with Our Creator and save your Soul from religion.

Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truly Free!

Love and Believe in Our Creator;
Love and Believe in Yourself.

"religion is Spiritual fraud"; "religion is the Worse invention of humanity" - Jesus Christ, Buddha and any other being with Spiritual intelligence.
