Isaiah 53 (written 2700 years ago)
3He was despised and rejected and forsaken by men, a Man of sorrows and pains, and acquainted with grief and sickness; and like One from Whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or have any esteem for Him.

5But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole.
6All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has made to light upon Him the guilt and iniquity of us all.

Kidd, the answer is not as simple as "Jesus Christ," although that answer is certainly true. At Isaiah 41, God assures the Jewish people that He has not cast them off; He will always remember and save them. He also calls them His "servant":

8 “ But you, Israel, are My servant,
Jacob whom I have chosen,
The descendants of Abraham My friend.
9 You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth,
And called from its farthest regions,
And said to you,
‘ You are My servant,
I have chosen you and have not cast you away:"

God reiterates this principal several times between Isaiah 41 and 53; so the Jews' understanding of Isaiah 52:13-15 (regarding the "Suffering Servant") and Isaiah 53 is not altogether wrong (I know my Christian brethren will be shocked to see me write this, but it is the truth). The truth is, God was speaking about BOTH of them in SOME portions of this prophecy.

Between Isaiah 41 and 53, God slowly builds a case that One will arise from His chosen servant, the Jews, who will represent the epitome of Jewishness: the Messiah. It is this Messiah who will actually bear the sins of the world.

While there are many good arguments today's Jews give to show they are the "suffering servant" discussed here, it is the Servant's bearing of sins that proves God isn't speaking of them. If you remember, God promised the Jews that, if they obey His commandments He would BLESS them; if they were disobedient, He would CURSE them (see Deut. 28, for example). Remember, God told them within Leviticus that, in order for a blood sacrifice to be acceptable, it had to be perfect and unblemished. So if the Jewish people were perfect and unblemished, then God would be violating His word if He cursed them by making them bear the sins of all humanity!

However, I reiterate that there is some truth in their arguments. Look at the enormous persecution the Jews have experienced throughout history: from Christians, Hitler, the Greeks ... it goes on and on. While this suffering did not remove sin as Jesus' sacrifice did, the Jews have, in fact, bourn the sins of an unrighteous world, have they not?

Their time of glory is coming soon. Please, pray for them.
