We are an evangelical Christian church who believe that we were commanded to love God and our fellow man. We try our best.
We show our love for our fellow man by setting up and managing services such as shelters, food, support, thrift stores and disaster relief. I always envisage us as workers with a bible under one arm and a mop and bucket under the other, but one of our local congregation runs an international cancer support group as her ministry.
We don't drink alcohol or smoke and some people wear a uniform but many don't. Check the link below for some comments on costs.
We are very sociable - if you could see our coffee house evenings you might be surprised to see how much fun we have!

Well it's a religion. Most of the members are part of the religion. They live under very strict rules about what they can and cannot do, for example they are not permitted to dance. But their service to humanity is amazing and their intepretation of Christ's mandate is incredibly insightful and would impress even the most stubborn athiest.

Best thing to do is go to www.salvationarmyusa.org and check the 'about us' part. (It's an international organization--over 100 countries--, so you could go to the main site, as well). You'll see for yourself what it's all about.
It's both a religious organization and not-for-profit; what type of controversy are you concerned about? Religious or social?

They are good but rather too generous with their expenses. For any not for profit agency the administrative cost should be about 10% but Army believes in style if you know what I mean.

I decline to get into it. I'll just say that it's doctrine isn't all there and I wouldn't get mixed up with it.
