What are his interests?
My father in-law has a Harley, so we usually find him something @ the Harely Davidson store.
Camping? I have given the litte keychain Leatherman to every male in our family. They love it!!! (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=13255&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults)
Books... fiction or personal interests.
Does he take care of his car? There are car wash kits you can buy.
Movies... I have put together little movie gift with a favorite movie, popcorn and favorite movie candy. I wrapped it all up in a big popcorn bowl.
Tools that he may need or want... a drill or lazer leveler.
Work in an office? You could give a framed picture of you and your husband.
Go to football or hockey games? Jersey or personalized flask or tickets to a sporting event.
If I think of something else, I'll add it.

i would suggest a nice watch, that is always nice. if your father in law has a current wife/gf, give him a gift certificate for two to a fancy restaurant. ties are fun things to give. if he is an avid reader, give him books. if he likes entertainment, give him a movie. also, its okay to ask your mother in law for ideas too :]

Dinner, perhaps bowling or yet another interest you both like (roller skating etc), and probably a museum or some thing like that. as far because the action picture difficulty, pass there & %. one neither of you comprehend what it really is about and pass with that one. perhaps neither of you'll like it and it is going to likely be the communication of the nighttime.
