If my grandmother was born in the uk and became a us citizen through marriage but now is widowed and wishes to return, what steps does she need to take or can she just go back? If she can just go back, which passport does she use, the UK one or the US one?

If she wishes to enter the UK as a British citizen, she should use her British passport. It's possible, however, that her British passport has expired a long time ago. If it did, she should apply for a new one at the nearest British consulate.

If she wants to use her US passport, she would need a visa just like anyone else. Her UK passport has almost certainly expired. She needs to go to her nearest UK consulate for advice -

She also needs to think about how and where she is going to live in the UK. Most likely, because she and her husband have not paid national insurance contributions, she would not get a UK pension as such, but just basic income support. After some delay, she might be able to get local authority housing, but again it'll be basic. On the other hand, she should get comprehensive free health care. Of course, if she gets a US pension, that should be payable in the UK, but notice that the exchange rate is not very good at the moment. The consulate should be able to advise about all these issues.

My opinion is that moving back to the UK is a big step if someone has lived away for a long time. I would suggest that she visit for a while first - things may not be as rosy as she remembers them!

When she leaves the United States she will have to show her US passport - and to enter the United Kingdom she will have to show her UK one. She should carry both. There is no need to mention anything about her dual-citizenship unless they specifically ask about it. :-)

Why couldn't she go back? Her age may preclude this though. Don't you have citizenship rights in both countries if you have duel citizenship? She might have trouble coming back here though. Not sure.
