The problem is that most people who were abused were strong Catholics. Their first reaction when faced with such a situation was to bring it to their priest, or deacon, or other cleric. Too often, it took many years (if ever) before the secular authorities heard the stories. During that time, the church was able to move priests from parishes, apply pressure to victims, and otherwise circle the wagons. There is MUCH unclear in the actions of the higher ranks of the church. Certainly there was some turning of blind eye, probably there was willful refusal to see, and probably there was outright conspiracy to hide the truth. But let's be clear: the Catholic Church is 2000 yrs old. The events of the last few decades are not new, nor s the response of the church. They have had 2000 years of coverup, and it comes hard for them to change, even those who abhor what has been revealed.
