If you like the way your friends' sounds, then go for it. It's all about what YOU want. I personally decide mostly based on the 'clarity-to-price ratio'
If you want recommendations for budget yet quality amps, try Hifonics. Hifonics is one of the most highly recognized budget brands, for amps.
Sony, in my opinion, is not up there with the big dogs, like some moron mentioned. They really aren't that high of quality. They are known for distortion and getting hot.
Like I said before, if you like the way your friends' sounded, and you can get deals on them then do it. Otherwise there are way better brands for the money.

Good Luck!

If you want to push your equipment to the max then sony is probably not a great brand. I have an amp from sony and I love it, it's pretty loud and doesn't run too hot. A bit much distortion at high output but that is part the head unit. I would buy it or look for a good deal on ebay for a better brand.

The Sony car audio lineup is generally entry-level. I've never been impressed with anything Sony has put out. OK equipment, but I would personally look elsewhere.

After plenty of experience installing Sony Xplod products (as well as troubleshooting problems with them) here's what I'd say about them:

Their amplifiers have been solid for as long as I've worked with them, and I haven't seen more problems with them than with any other brand. I wasn't happy with some of their head units about 6-7 years ago, but they've improved since then, and lately I think they compare well with anything in their price range. I've never been impressed with Sony's speaker line, but that's true of most head unit/amp manufacturers that also make speakers.

I wouldn't have any reservations about that amplifier. If you like it, and it matches what you want to do with it, and you can get it for a good price, then go ahead.

The people that say anything bad about Sony either doesn't know what they are doing in the first place or are just going on hearsay.

I have a few years invested in the mobile audio/consumer electronics field. I've seen product come and go. I have repaired many different brands of amplifiers and I can say that anything Sony puts out is well worth the money.

Aslo since Sony amplifiers are all now CEA-2006 compliant, this raises my expectations of them even more.

I've now owned my Sony XM2200GTX 1200 watt (200 watts RMS X 2) amplifier for three years and not once has it ever overheated or malfunctioned as so many people complain about.

In my opinion, Sony is right up there with the big boys as far as design quality and performance.

I will answer your question with a question, would you trust anything with Xplode in its name? No thanks!

But seriously... save your money and buy something better. Anyone that knows anything about car audio and says to buy a sony you should never listen to them again! I am not doggin sony as a company, look they got some sweet sh** out there like the PS3 and stuff but when it comes to car audio they are not "worthy" IMO

Sony's ok for a basic setup. It's like comparing Reebok to Nike. I would suggest if your gonna get anykind of stereo equipment do a lot of research so you don't feel like you could have spent an extra 100 bucks for the one you really wanted. Go Alpine you won't be dissapointed.
