My family, with children ages 16 and 11, is planning to vacation at one of the two islands around the month of December/January. I have heard both are beautiful, but from your experience, which one should we visit?

We loved Maui, and found great beaches for snorkeling and swimming with kids, like Napili Bay or Big Beach.

The volcano is pretty cool - you can see the Big Island from the top (10,000 feet!)

It depends on what you like to do. Kauai is not very developed so therefore has a lot of outdoorsy activities. Maui is more touristy so therefore will have a combination of things to do for you and your kids.

I would suggest Maui in December/January.....Kauai will tend to be a bit rainer than Maui in the winter months.

Have a great trip!

Aloha,

Both are very different. Kauai is wild and remote. The Na Pali Coast is breathtaking and not to be missed.

Compared, Maui feels almost crowded but still is very nice.

One good choice would be to start with one week in Kauai to rest and relax surrounded by nature, then move to Maui for some fun and watersports.

The two islands are different, so it depends on what you are looking for.

I would guess that you will be better off on Maui, it has more things to do for kids that age. Maui is more dramatic, however Kauai is more beautiful.

I am kind of biased on this , because I live on Maui, but you should do one week here in Maui and one week in Kauai. They are both awesome islands, and west Maui's beaches are the best, with a little rain, or trade shower, and plenty of things to do. Kauai, is smaller, and a little more laid back. North shore, at Hanalei Bay, is awesome, plenty surfing, and south shore is a lot less rain, as it can rain a lot on the north shore of Kauai. They really are great islands. Aloha.........................

The kids age are a factor, spending time at the beach is a given on both islands.
On Maui there is Haleakala Crater, good for sight-seeing and hiking. Bike riding down the mountain is something the kids would enjoy with you.
Lots of Craft Fairs.
Pick up some magazines pictures are worth a thousand words.
Aloha
