Do you consider it all fiction, and totally discountable? Or do you consider it more of parables? Or do you just discount the voodoo?

This book is a 2000 year-old novel and we just really need to get over it.

i dont consider it a total work of fiction no. i believe there was a jesus of nazereth but he wasnt god. i dont believe in the works of miracles he performed, water to wine, curing the lame, letting the blind see, etc. time and people probably distorted the facts of these incidences. as for the old testament, it is full of stories and legends that tell great lessons and metaphors. some of it is historical but it cant be used as a history text book. some of it can be explained by science but it cant be used as a science text book. many people seem to lose track of this.

I am an atheist. I consider the bible historical fiction, much like the historical fiction of today. Mainly fantasy set in a period drama.

They are a list of beliefs and anecdotes that supply a base moral instinct to those who read and believe in them. They are interesting, and I do not discount any information that is made while someone is trying to help others.

Pretty much all of it.

Sure, it contains a few historical/geographic facts - so does Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code. But those are just as discountable...

Surprisingly enough, i haven't read it all. Some of stuff could have happened. It's not too far out to suggest that there was a chap called Jesus who had a beard and went around being nice to people. I have no way of knowing whether it did or did not happen, and it doesn't matter.

It's a selection of fairy tales inspired by stories bronze age middle eastern goat herders were telling at night, around the camp fire, playing to scare each other.

I much prefer Lord Of The Ring or Harry Potter...

I cannot determine if any of the things in the Bible were based on fact or if it is all fiction.

e.g. I don't know if there really was a man named Jesus or if he never existed.

But let me be clear, even if he did exist that doesn't mean he was the son of God.

I'm not atheist, but I view the bible as an useful moral fable that incorperates some historical elements.

I dont discount everything. There is some beautiful poetry. There are some very good moral precepts. I do not accept it as history. There are many things in it that I find abhorrent, such as hell.
