Noticed my cat (1yr old) had a cut on one of his claws. Went to touch it to check out and he hissed and scrabbed me. He is now off his food and can not mieow properly. Any ideas what can be wrong? Not to mention he is a tom and so is his father whom I also own along with his mother and brother.

Thanks for the smart comments but seriously worried about him tonight. Live in a rural area so no vet available.
Would welcome meantime suggestions!

I would think there is a vet available somewhere, unless you live in the remote areas of Siberia or something! If the cat it not eating, he needs to see a vet. Not eating after 2 days, especially if you've tried tempting with tuna and the like. Being off food could because because is foot is hurting and bothering him, or could be a sign of something more serious.

Please have a look in the yellow pages of your area for a vet, or ask around! Otherwise what are you going to do if/when something really serious happens with the cat one day, like it gets a broken leg, or is in huge amount of pain? I'm not trying to be smart, just trying to get you to think/plan ahead!

The cat has obviously injured his paw. The cut needs to be cleaned and disinfected. Wrap the cat in a towel tightly so you can hold him without getting scratched yourself. Expose only the head and the injured paw. You may need the help of another pair of hands for this. Once you have the cat under control (they tend to quit struggling once they know they know they cannot escape), wash the cut with hydrogen peroxide. Use cotton buds. If you do not have hydrogen peroxide, wash the cut with plain soap and warm water. Apply an antibiotic cream. The cat will immediately lick the paw once released, so try to hold on to the cat for at least 5 mins before letting him go. By then, the antibiotic would have reached the inside of the cut, so even if the cat licks it, some of the medicine has already started to do its work. Clean the cut 3 times a day and keep the cat indoors until the cut heals or closes up.
As for food, tempt him with some canned tuna - the water based kind. I know of no cat that could resist tuna.

Good luck

Is he vaccinated?? Infectious disease is possbile if he is not. Likely he has been out fighting and that is how he got the injury. Along with the injury, he could have a fever, which will cause a cat to not eat, hide or be agitated. As soon as you can get him to a vet, he needs to be tested for leukemia/FIV. That is a very simple and cheap blood test.
If he does not improve, you really need to just drive the distance and get him to a vet. Otherwise, no one can tell you what may happen or how sick he really is.
In the meantime, keep him INSIDE. Keep food an water available in case he wants it later. Check your phone book for the closest emergency vet.

The foot might be infected , and if left untreated could be very serious. My cat ripped one of her claws out, luckily we noticed it quickly, the vet said that if we had not given her antibiotics she may have ended up having to have her toe amputated. If the toe with the damaged claw is infected then the cat may be off her food and have a temperature. You should really get it to a vet.

I would say he needs the vet as a matter of urgency. It sounds to me as his claw got an infection and that has now gone into his whole system. Perhaps it is also time that you had him neutered. I hope he is okay!

I would take him to the vet - injured claw could be infected and his little life could be in danger. Also he could have worms - definitely get the vet to check him out.

I can never understand why people post questions on here about injured animals...no one here can examine your pet so therefore no one here is qualified to answer correctly...your cat needs to go to the vets for a proper examination and diagnosis, and to be given the appropriate treatment...

Ring the PDSA, the RSPCA or a vet...they will always offer advice if you are that concerned...

until you can get him to your vet, keep him indoors. try giving him some tuna (canned in water) to try to entice him to eat. it could be anything from infection in paw to parasites. but the main thing is keep him indoors until you get him to vet.keep checking on him. i hope everything will be ok. let me know what happens. it;s a big worry when one of our furry ones are sick and we don't know what it is.
