Birds & boats. You can ALWAYS sell paintings of birds and boats. They don't even need to be all that good!

I don't know what a modern realist painter would do but an artist would keep painting something meaningful and creative regardless of it's retail value.

If you want saleable, paint a collection of strong women with a brief biography on each and announce that partial proceeds will go to breast cancer research. You gotta admit, that would sell!

Images of places that people have been and remember fondly, but don't get hokey with it, no Disneyland. However, places like the old west, monument valley, Niagara falls, Yosemite, etc. have a huge audience. So do famous buildings that are associated with wonderful places of trips, such as Big Ben, Eiffel Tower, St. Peters in Rome, etc.
