Everyone else I know, their cat makes meow sounds, but mine whines. He whines when he want's something, doesn't want something, or when he's not comfortable. Do other cats whine too?

He's a Main Coon and very spoiled (my fault). I had no idea the variety of sounds that cat's make. I'm very glad that this is normal...Thanks for all the great answers, I wish I could give you all the points. Thanks!

Too funny! I honestly thought my kitty, a brown tabby named Wally is the only one who whines. He also moans (he has some tummy issues) and he sounds frighteningly human. Lately he makes this sound that really isn't a meow, (Wally doesn't have any so called normal meows) it is loud and obnoxious. He stands in front of his empty food dish and then makes eye contact with me and he says something that really sounds like NOW- MAW- MAW -NOW So I get it.
He wants his eats now. Don't you just love cats?

Don't worry, he's fine as long as you know that you are giving good care, I'm sure that's just the way he is, has his own identity. my cat is very quite, sometimes I wonder if she's okay, if she wants anything she just sit in front of me and waits, then I know she wants to be picked up, and when i pick her up Boy oh Boy what beautiful musical purrs, she's so happy. So I guess every one or cat does their own thing. Is he a young kitten or a full grown cat maybe he'll out grow it, other wise just love him, he's your baby, whines and all,,,

All cats are not the same (just like people) The sounds they make depend on a lot of things (like breed for example) I have a himalayan kitty and since her face is short she sounds different from a cat that has a long face.

I don't know, my cat meows, sneezes, purrs, hisses and makes this weird sound when som1 sneaks up on her, it is like a mix between a meow and a purr at the same time but i dont think she ever whined at me b4 that is weird.

Don't worry - it's probably just a way of speaking. One of our three cats makes a quacking noise! Or rather, a meow that sounds like a quack! Maybe you fuss too much and he knows he's going to get attention.

My cats say...Maaaaa maaa...I know this sounds strange. But when I come home...there they are....Maaaaa maaaa....there is a language to cats. "Errrr, Err" means: come check out what is in this room. "Arrrrgh Arrrgh mew" means: I have a present for you. "Ouuurrrr frrrrr orrr prrr ouuu" means I think you are hot and glad I am your sweetie. "Awouie Awouie" means I have a mouse in my mouth and I want it to be yours. Hope that helps. Just be sure you are prepared when your cat states..." ahhhhouie owwwwww" that means committment!!!!! They are in it for the long haul.

That's just his quirk.

Like people, each cat has a different 'voice'. For instance, one of my kitties 'chirps', and the other one 'squeaks'.
