A Vet Tech is someone that can handle the technical aspects of veterinary work. They can usually draw blood, take animal fluid samples, run lab tests, maybe operate Xray or ultrasound gear, maybe give medications.

A Vet Doctor can prescribe medications, read and diagnose Xrays and ultrasounds, and determine what the results of lab tests mean. Most importantly they are trained to determine, what, if anything is wrong with your animal.

Experienced Vet Techs are very knowledgeable of veterinary medicine. But they are not Vet Doctors. Doctors keep up with latest discoveries and treatment methods and medicines. A vet tech in a large facility may only have experience with Xray machines or doing blood work.

There are great Vet Techs and lousy Vet Techs. There are great Vet Doctors and lousy Vet Doctors. Listen to them, carefully consider what they say, and most of all use your own common sense and "gut feeling."

A veterinary assistant is like a medical assistant. They can do a limited amount of stuff with patients. A Veterinary Technician is more like a nurse. I don't know where you live so I can't say what the pay would be. Usually Vet Asst. get minimum wage or a little bit more.
