Here in South Carolina, legislation has been proposed that will require a woman to view an ultrasound image of her fetus prior to having the abortion. How about that?

Okay, good answers everyone-- except for the two of you that were disrespectful to South Carolina.... Obviously, I cannot pick one answer over the other, nor will I reveal my stand on the issue, so it will go out to vote. ♥

It sounds like the South Carolina govt is trying to bully someone into not having an abortion. But quick question, whats to stop the women from just closing their eyes???

I think it is good... Though women call it a "choice", I define a choice by knowing all there is to know about each option. In order to choose correctly, all implications and consequences must be thought of and known. A woman who has an abortion often doesn't realize or does not want to admit to herself that the baby she is about to terminate is alive, moving, with a heartbeat and miniscule, yet human features. If, after an ultrasound, she still decides to have the abortion, then she can never say "well, I didn't know". She can accept what she has done and not blame her inexperience, her lack of knowledge or education, only herself.

Pro-choice people should be especially happy about this, as it is making sure that their "choice" is not being abused by women who just want to use abortion as a form of birth control. It is making sure that woman have a fully informed "choice", and since that is what they believe in, they should be grateful for this legislation that will guarantee a fully infomed choice.

I think it is a great idea. I have not heard of this before. I think if it is an abortion simply because they dont want to have the baby they should have to look at the angel they will be killing. I think though that a woman whos health is in danger due to the pregnancy or a rape victim who has already been tramatized with the violent crime committed towards her should not be forced to view the ultrasound.

ABORTION IS NOT A FORM OF BIRTH CONTROL

First of all, I am a rape victim. So my answer may not be what you want to hear. I believe a woman should have to see an ultra sound before an abortion. Too many babies die for the sake of self, ie... the flat stomach, mad at boyfriend, had sex without protection, and even rape to name a few. There are some good adoption programs out there. Also she needs to know what is being killed is half of her!
When I found out I was pregnant after the rape, it was devestating. But, there was no reason to commit the second wrong, ie kill the baby. What had the baby done to me? Nothing!
I chose to keep him alive, then I chose to keep him period. He is now 18 and I can't imagine being without him! No matter what, he's mine too, I chose to love my half more than hate the donors half. I call that healing.

And who is paying for all these ultrasounds? The is pointless. Do they think that women are going to go OH that blob! Yes, oh, my a baby! I know I am pregnant but I didn't realise that that meant that I have a blurry alien that will someday be a baby if I choose too....

That's stupid and a waste of money.

Unless things in the States are WAY different than here in Canada, BEFORE the abortion you are councilled at least twice. Everything is explained and there are charts to look at at stages of development. The process is VERY informed. confidential and complete. Looking at one's own ultrasound is just going to cause further emotional upset for something that is NOT easy!

I think that it doesn't matter and depends on the women, if she has made up her mind it will not make a difference, especially if its a younger/unplanned pregnancy. However, to mandate that as law is going a little over the top, if they are tyring to stop abortions then they should be prepared for other risks associated with that law, i.e. higher adoption rates crime, health care costs rising due to ultrasound mandate.
I think South Carolina should focus on more critical issues.

Scare tactic. Besides, the ultrasound of a fetus in the first trimester doesn't look like anything. I don't understand why they think it would make much of a difference.

How about the people that proposed it and support it adopt all the unwanted crackhead, FAS, malnourished babies that are born. That would solve the problem of how they are raised and some of the welfare problem.

kind of seems pointless to me....not a big fan of Abortion but whats the point of the women seeing the image...dosen't look like a baby on the ultrasound at that stage of pregnancy.

I think it's a good idea. It has nothing to do with being for or against abortion; it's about being fully informed as a woman.

Yep, I also live in SC and it's been all over the news. I think whether or not you are pro-life/pro-choice affects whether you think that's a good thing or not. Personally, I think that is increadibly stupid. They are trying to guilt you into wanting a baby... I don't think it's right and I don't think you should have to look at an ultrasound. If you honestly don't want the baby, an ultrasound isn't going to change your mind.
