Respect for our fellow human beings does not have to be earned. It is a given. For those who say it must be earned, what they are really saying is: If I agree with them I will show respect. If I don't then it is okay to bash them.

Respect is not deserved; it is *earned*.

edit -- Do I respect myself? I have learned to. I had to earn my own respect as well, by proving my worth as a person. I do not believe it is inherent.
