How do I go by contacting a collection agency to validate debt? I see the item on my credit report, but not the whole account number, and I don't have the account number? What do I need to do in order to get this debt validated?

First, the reporting period "cannot" be re-aged as a previous poster stated.

Just keep in mind that if you are still within the collecting SOL for your state, by sending them a validation letter or disputing it with the CRA's, you may run the risk of them starting to actively persue it.

Click on my profile and click on the link to find the SOL in your state. You might also do some reading in the other links I have listed - to the FDCPA, etc

If you are past the collecting SOL, they can still actively persue it but the cannot legally sue Though being past the collecting SOL usually does not stop them from trying to sue. If you are past the collecting SOL for your state, you have a legal right to send a SOL letter - which tells them the debt is noncollectible and to take a hike.

For your debt validation letter to the collection agency, use the account number as it is shown on your reports.

In your letter you might mention that you recently received your credit reports from and noticed had placed an erroneous and derogatory entry on it/them claiming that you owe $x.xx amount.
That you are requesting validation of the alleged debt under the FDCPA

Also include a limited cease and desist saying
I am requesting that no phone contact be made by you to my home or place of business as it is inconvenient to me. All future correspondence from you must be done in writing and sent by USPS.

Mail it certified mail return receipt. When you get the green card back, dispute the trade line with the credit reporting agencies.

IF the collection agency writes you back requesting information from "you", tell them that if they cannot identify the alleged account which had come directly from your credit report, it is obvious the account was placed in error and must be deleted. Then tell them to delete it within 5 business days.

Start disputing the debts as not mine. You will be surprised at how many will come off.

Depending on the age of the debts you may want to leave them alone. You run the risk of starting the 7 year clock and further damaging your credit report.

Good luck

On one of the last few pages of you credit report should be a list of your creditors. You just have to find the ones you want to contact on that list and do what it says, some say to call and some say to write a letter.
