i put a weber caruretor, or could it be the timing

your timming is off or it could also be your air to fuel ratio on the carb.

Make sure the timing is set right, maybe to retarded, then look at the carb. Backfires are from a lean condition, not a rich condition. Lean fuel mixture has a delayed ignition, so unburned fuel gets into the exhaust where it will ignite and backfire. Webers are usually re-jettable quite easily, get a Haynes manual on them and do some research.

Idle mixture is too rich.
Or you could have the distributor vacuum line hooked up to the wrong vacuum port on the carburator.
