A lifetime. Don't be lulled into thinking that doctors can just get their degree and stop learning at that point. They have to keep abreast of new drugs, new techniques, new treatments and new regulations which may affect their profession. They certainly don't obtain this knowledge through osmosis. If you opt for this profession, be prepared for a long (40 to 50 years), hard row to hoe. Many doctors, especially gp's since they visit with hospitalized patients as well as those in their office, have to work terribly long hours and have little time for a family life.
