Okay, the new Mazda 5 has 44.4 cubic feet of cargo room, and 97.7 cubic feet of passenger volume for a grand total of 142.1 cubic feet (or 245548.801 cubic inches) of room for tomatoes. Now, I'm going to make a few assumptions here. First is that each tomato has a diameter of 3 inches and is perfectly spherical. That gives you a volume of (4/3)(pi)(r^3) with an r of 1.5 inches. Plug in to give a volume of 14.13 cubic inches per tomato. Now, if you assume that NO space is wasted, ie the tomatoes are crushed in there to remove all air volume, then just divide the total volume by the volume per tomato. 245548.801cin/14.13cin/tomato = 17377.8 tomatoes. And since the question asks for whole tomatoes, the last 0.8 doesn't count. 17377 tomatoes assuming no wasted volume and perfectly spherical tomatoes of uniform 3in diameter.

Addition-
There was a loose experimental study done where some dude trying to win a contest determined that 44% of the actual volume will be filled with air when you loose dump spherical objects in. So, if you want a corrected answer that removes my perfect packing assumption, multiply 245548.801cin by 0.56 to give 137,506.9 cin available for tomatoes. That gives a corrected answer of 9731 tomatoes.

1. determine the space in the car, determine the volume of the tomato. Divide the space in the car/vol of the tomato. Then include a factor for air between the tomatoes, dont think you have enought information to solve this complex problem

Depends on the volume of the car, and how big (and what shape) the tomatoes are. Also, if you can squish the tomatoes or if they have to stay perfect. There's no way to answer it without more information.

Provided you are in the drivers seat, you can have one tomato seated on the passenger side and two in the back seat if they are blones or three if they are brunette. Brunettes are not as fussy.
