It sounds like a cable problem. Work you way through this link.

If your still in trouble look up brake servicing on this site.

If your still in trouble take it to your local bike shop. It may cost more to fix it properly than the bike is worth.

DO NOT RIDE IT WITHOUT A WORKING BRAKE

Wal mart bikes are not built to last. There is a high chance that many other failures are just around the corner.

You are obviously doing enough cycling to justify a reasonable quality bike. This is the cheapest option in the long run.

Good luck and keep cycling.

I agree with others that this may be a problem that a qualified mechanic should address. However, it could be a very simple issue. Depending upon how old the bike is and how it's been stored, the cable in the housing may be rusted or binding. Try squirting some lubricant in both ends of the housing and on the moving parts of the brake - not the rim or brake pad :)

This could be a quick solution. Unforutnately, it could also be the spring tension of the brake or a faulty brake lever. Those would be more expensive.

i might choose for the disc breaks, much greater stable, greater effective, and that they do no longer positioned on out as rapid. although they are heavier and changing the sides would be a drag. once you're worried approximately money shop your v's yet while no longer i might replace to disk. For leaping, v brakes are greater ideal, yet for downhill i might go with disc.

That's way too in depth to diagnose in this forum, and there may be other problems that require parts replacement, e.g. corroded cables or pivots, stripped adjustments, etc. Take it to a bike shop before you kill yourself.
