I work one day a week at home (four others in the office). I bought a laptop (don't have the receipt) and would like to claim it as an exemption. Can I? If so, what form in TurboTax is it under?

ummmm. Perhaps it will serve you well to visit a tax professional! I saw your other question about filing status. (MFJ is usually the best status for married people)

An exemption is counting the people who are claimed by the taxpayer each year.

A deduction for a computer in a home office is a different matter. There are questions which must be answered to determine if that is a legitimate deduction.

good luck

I assume that you're asking about a deduction, not an exemption - an exemption is an amount given for a PERSON, which a computer is NOT.

If you could claim it, which is fairly unlikely, you'd have to itemize and would list it as an unreimbursed business expense. There would be a number of requirements the purchase and the use of the laptop would have to meet to qualify for a deduction. And since you don't have a receipt, you almost surely would run into a problem if audited.

I'm not a tax person, but I'm pretty sure you can claim a portion under office expenses. However, I'd be careful if you don't have a receipt. If you get audited, there could be a problem. Do you have a credit card statement with the purchase listed??

You may be able to claim SOME of the cost as a business expense DEDUCTION. Exemptions are for PEOPLE. I recommend consulting a professional for details.
