I personally received 4 calls in the last 2 hours from telemarketers that knew my name. It is NOT obvious that it is not a telemarketer. If your phone number has EVER been listed to a Brenda, every telemarketer on the planet knows that.

The reason they did not ask you to buy anything is in your question. You said it was the wrong number and HUNG UP. If you had stayed on the line, they would have started the sales pitch.

My favorite pitch is "I'm not calling to sell you anything. I just want to offer a free quote." I always respond "That would be a quote for the item your not selling?"

Telemarketers have ways of blocking the numbers they're calling from, so if your caller ID can't get a number it will say 000-000-0000. As for why they didn't ask you to buy something, it's probably because you said it was a wrong number. I've never worked as a telemarketer, but saying it's a wrong number usually gets them to hang up. I don't think it gets them to stop trying, but at least they hang up. The calls may not all be from the same caller either, it could be 10 different telemarketers. You should register for the do not call list at www.donotcall.gov. It should at least reduce the number of calls you get.

It's a telemarketer of some sort. I make it a point NOT to answer the phone unless I recognize the number and/or the name of the person/company calling.

It's most likely not a telemarketer, but a bill collector. They often use phone numbers like 000-000-0000 or 999-999-9999 or even 1234, etc.

Most telemarketers will either show up properly on caller-id or will show "unavailable".

General rule of thumb, never talk to bill collectors over the phone, ask them to mail you something.
